Townwide yard sale: Annual Jermyn townwide yard sale weekend, Aug. 16-17, starts at 8 a.m. All residents are invited to participate. Sponsored by the Jermyn Shade Tree Commission. All sale items should be on private property, with no obstruction to road and sidewalks. No borough permits are required. Rain date is Aug. 17.

Summer fest: St. John the Evangelist Parish Summer Fest ’25, Aug. 7-9, 5-10 p.m., grounds of St. John the Evangelist Church, 35 William St. Featured entertainment will include the Taxmen on Aug. 7, Joe Stanky and the Cadets on Aug. 8 and Flaxy Morgan on Aug. 9. A variety of foods will be available for purchase. Games of chance, raffles, cash bingo, dime pitch and children’s games will be available in the Monsignor Bendik Pastoral Center (former Seton Catholic H.S. Auditorium), and food and entertainment will be on the church grounds.

Community shred day: State Rep. Jim Haddock, state Sen. Marty Flynn, the Duryea Police Department, Duryea Crime Watch and Hughestown Crime Watch invite residents to protect themselves from identity theft during a community shred day. The free event will be held July 26 from 10 a.m.-noon at Healey Playground, Wright Street and Foote Avenue in Duryea. Items to shred include old bills, bank statements, medical records, canceled checks, old tax returns or any documents that people would like to be permanently destroyed. There is a limit of two boxes of documents per household. Staples or paper clips do not need to be removed, but documents should be taken out of binders and notebooks. Anyone with questions may call Haddock’s office at 570-655-4883.

Information session: Johnson College will host a financial aid information session to assist current and prospective students in understanding and applying for financial aid, including the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), FSA ID setup, alternative loans and scholarship opportunities. Attendees will have the opportunity to access on-site computers to begin or complete their financial aid applications with guidance from college staff. The session is scheduled for Aug. 7 from 4-6 p.m. in Ideal Saldi Hall on the Scranton campus, 3427 N. Main Ave. Participants are encouraged to create their FSA ID in advance of the event, as processing can take three to five business days.
