There will be contests for school board seats in six Lackawanna County school districts outside of Scranton in the November election.
Incumbent board members on the Riverside, Dunmore and Old Forge school boards won nominations on the Democratic and Republican tickets, according to unofficial primary election results. Incumbents representing regions on the Carbondale Area, North Pocono and Valley View school boards also won nominations.
Riverside
Three incumbent board members will face three challengers for four seats on the board, each with a four year term, with Board President Carol Kaminski Armstrong and Mary Burke receiving Democratic and Republican nominations.
On the Democratic ticket, Burke was the top vote getter with 757; followed by Armstrong, 712; Marion Maurer, 621 votes and board member Dan Nenish, 561.
On the Republican ticket, Ronald A. Gallagher got the most votes with 331; Armstrong, 318; Burke, 304; and Board Secretary Barbara Fedor, 275.
Karla McKeel Perks and Lisa Balcerzak did not receive nominations. All eight candidates cross-filed as Democrats and Republicans.
Dunmore
Six people, including one incumbent, will vie for four seats, each with four year terms. The top two vote-getters on both the Democratic and Republican ballots were Chris Murray Sr. and Joseph Luciano.
On the Democratic ticket, Murray received 1,828 votes; Luciano 1,491; Board Treasurer Heidi McDonough, 1,313; and Amy Haun 1,047.
The results for the Republican ballot were Murray, with 298 votes; Joseph Luciano, 272; Deanna Leo, 206; and Corey Pregmon, 203.
All six candidates cross-filed.
Old Forge
It will be a five-way contest in the fall for four seats on the board, each carrying a four year term. Megan Sallavanti-DiBileo was the top vote getter on the Democratic and Republican ballots, and incumbent board member Alisha Marmo Hudak also received Democratic and Republican nominations.
The Democratic contest results were Sallavanti-DiBileo, with 721 votes; Hudak, 539; Board member Laura Zajaczkowski-Shumlas, 529; and Board assistant Secretary Jenna Derenick, 490.
The results on the Republican ballot were Sallavanti-DiBileo, 375 votes; Michael Zupon, 354; Hudak, 297; and Derenick, 245.
Michael Faris was the only candidate who didn’t get nominations on either ballot.
Sallavanti-DiBileo also won nominations to run unopposed in November for a single two year seat with an unexpired term, with 409 Democratic votes and 217 Republican votes.
All the candidates except Zupon, who ran as a Republican, cross-filed.
Carbondale Area
Two people will face off for one seat representing Region 3 on the board in the fall.
For Region 3, Board member Peter Turonis will face Jeffrey Magistro for one seat. On the Democratic ballot, voters chose Turonis with 199 votes, with Magistro receiving 115, while on the Republican ticket, Magistro got 65 votes and Turonis received 52.
In Region 2, Board member John “Jigger” Jordan and Bill Boyle received nominations to run unopposed for two seats, defeating Board member Marcella Kaczmarcik and Sara Tolerico Lynady. On the Democratic ticket, voters chose Jordan with 227 votes and Boyle with 225. On the Republican ballot, Boyle received 88 votes and Jordan got 83 votes.
Incumbent board Vice President James Dovin received nominations for a single seat representing Region 1, with 261 Democratic votes and 122 Republican votes.
All seven candidates cross-filed to run for the seats that have four-year terms.
North Pocono
An incumbent board member will face a challenge for one seat representing Region 2.
For that region, Board member Elizabeth Walsh was the top vote getter on the Democratic ticket with 299 votes, followed by Ashley Messoline with 129; Messoline received the most votes on the Republican ballot with 260, with Walsh receiving 99.
Incumbent board members Maura Maros and R. Mark Powell, along with Treasurer Pia McClaine, were uncontested for nominations for three seats representing Region 1, with Democratic votes coming to 471 for Powell, 420 for Maros and 418 for McClaine, and Republican votes being 265 for Powell, 208 for McClaine and 192 for Mauros.
All five candidates cross-filed for the seats that carry four-year terms.
Valley View
One incumbent board member was defeated in the race for Region 3 and there will be a contest in the fall for a single seat representing Region 2 in the fall.
In Region 3, Dominick J. Perini received Democratic and Republican nominations for the single seat over Board member Kenneth Gale. On the Democratic ticket, Perini received 580 votes, while Gale got 298. On the Republican ballot, Perini got 108 votes and Gale got 57.
For Region 2, James Rodway was the top vote getter on the Democratic ticket with 495 votes, followed by board Vice President Joseph F. Mondak, who received 289 votes. On the Republican ticket, Mondak received 149 votes, followed by Rodway, who got 115.
Incumbent board Secretary Joseph A. Farrell and board member Tom Owen ran unopposed for nominations for two seats, with the Democratic votes coming to 900 for Farrell and 856 for Owen, and Republican votes being 242 for Owen and 207 for Farrell.
All six candidates cross-filed to run for the seats that have four-year terms.
Uncontested races
Races for open seats on the Abington Heights, Lakeland and Mid Valley school boards, as well as seats representing Lackawanna County municipalities on the Lackawanna Trail school board, were uncontested in Tuesday’s primary election.
School board directors serve without pay.
