Extreme heat heading toward NEPA

Northeast Pennsylvania will be dealing with “oppressive heat and humidity” starting Sunday and lasting through at least Tuesday.

Heat index values are expected to reach the upper 90s and low 100s with little relief at night due to elevated humidity, according to a hazardous weather outlook issued by the National Weather Service’s office in Binghamton.

Here’s a look at the extended forecast:

  • Sunday: Sunny and hot, with a high near 95. Low 72.
  • Monday: Sunny and hot, with a high near 99. Low 73.
  • Tuesday: Mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 97. Low 73.
  • Wednesday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 94. Low 70.

Schuylkill County, which is served by NWS State College, is under an extreme heat watch beginning Sunday morning through Wednesday evening. Heat index values are expected over 105 are possible.

Residents are urged to drink plenty of fluids, wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing, stay in air-conditioned rooms and stay out of the sun.
