The first full week of summer brought a heat wave to Northeast Pennsylvania, with a heat index of more than 100 degrees, prompting some to hit area pools and splashpads. The forecast for the region called for a high of 99 degrees Monday, with heat index values as high as 105 degrees. The National Weather Service issued an extreme heat warning and heat advisory for Lackawanna, Luzerne and Wyoming counties. The warning remained in effect until 8 p.m. Monday; the advisory is in effect until 8 p.m. Wednesday. The agency warned that heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events. Officials advised drinking plenty of fluids, staying in an air-conditioned room, staying out of the sun, and checking up on relatives and neighbors. Temperatures are expected to be in the 90s through Wednesday. The hot weather is expected to taper off later this week, as the NWS forecast for Thursday, Friday and the weekend calls for temperatures in the 80s, but there will be a chance of rain and thunderstorms those days. Scranton’s outdoor splash pads and pools are open daily from noon to 6 p.m. through Labor Day.
