Hot, humid weather hitting Northeastern Pennsylvania

Northeast Pennsylvania will feel the heat this week.

Heat and humidity are returning to the region, with temperatures expected to be in the 90s through Wednesday. However, the high humidity will make it feel like nearly 100 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

A hazardous weather outlook was issued for much of Northeast Pennsylvania, including Lackawanna, Luzerne, Susquehanna, Wyoming, Pike and Wayne counties.

The agency expected peak heat index values getting into lower to mid 90s Monday. The high heat index will continue through Wednesday, with peak heat index values expected to get into the mid to upper 90s Tuesday, and low to mid 90s on Wednesday.

Temperatures are expected to reach a high of 92 degrees in Scranton and 93 degrees in Wilkes-Barre. The hottest day will be Tuesday, with the high being 95 degrees in Scranton and 96 degrees in Wilkes-Barre, and temperatures will dip down Wednesday to 93 degrees in both cities.

The heat index will hit close to 100 degrees Tuesday and Wednesday, with humidity in the upper 60s on Tuesday and close to 70 degrees Wednesday.

With the high humidity, the agency is “on the cusp” of declaring a heat advisory for Tuesday, Danielle Knittle, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Binghamton forecast office, said. A heat advisory is issued if the heat index reaches 100 degrees or higher for the region.

Relief from the heat is in sight later this week, with temperatures in the low 80s beginning Thursday through the weekend, with a chance of rain Thursday.
