A temporary bridge carrying Green Ridge Street over the Lackawanna River in Scranton opened Tuesday, the state Department of Transportation announced.
PennDOT expects the temporary bridge for vehicles and pedestrians to remain in use until construction of the new bridge is completed in early 2026. The temporary bridge accommodates two-lane, two-way traffic with an attached pedestrian walkway located on the upstream side of the bridge.
Last year, the state Department of Transportation started a project to replace the 1946 Green Ridge Street Bridge. PennDOT on Dec. 4 announced it started an extended closure and detour of part of Nay Aug Avenue in Scranton for reconstruction as part of a project to replace the nearby bridge.
The project called for construction of a temporary bridge next to the original bridge by spring 2025, which now has been completed, and to be followed by demolition of the original bridge and construction of a permanent bridge in that same spot.

Meanwhile, Pennsylvania American Water continues work on a sewer-stormwater tank in the parking lot of the Green Ridge Plaza near PennDOT’s bridge project.
