OLYPHANT — A borough woman threatened another woman with a hammer after having acted aggressively toward her in the past, police charge.
Shelby McCormick, 27, of 147 Northpoint Drive, is charged with assault and harassment.
According to the criminal complaint:
Olyphant police were called to the Northpoint Drive residence Monday at about 4 p.m. Officers spoke with Dee McConnell, the victim, who said McCormick had threatened her with a wooden-handled hammer as the two were standing outside the residence.
She said she had been afraid of McCormick for a long time.
McConnell said McCormick was swinging the hammer less than a foot away from her and had pushed her into the side of the residence. Police noted cuts to McConnell’s arms consistent with such an attack.
Officers found McCormick hiding in a basement closet, with blood on her hands and cuts on her fingers.
McCormick told police she had been abused by her boyfriend for several years. She denied threatening McConnell with a hammer.
Officers took McCormick into custody. She was transported to the Lehigh Valley Hospital–Dickson City for evaluation.
Officers then spoke with a neighbor who had reported the incident.
The woman said she grew concerned when she heard a loud disturbance near the Northpoint Drive residence.
She told officers she had not seen McCormick with a hammer.
Officers had been called to the residence repeatedly and noted McConnell had previously requested that McCormick leave the residence.
Police noted McCormick still used the Northpoint Drive address on her state identification card.
McConnell said she lives in fear of McCormick attacking her.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on June 16 before District Judge Paul Ware. McCormick remains at Lackawanna County Prison in lieu of $2,500, according to court records.
