A Scranton man assaulted his wife and damaged their apartment, city police charge.

Christopher Batista, 22, of 10 Amity Court, is charged with assault, harassment and criminal mischief, according to a criminal complaint.

Officers responded Saturday at about 11 p.m. after a neighbor reported a man announced he was looking for shotgun shells, police said. They spoke with Navara Tuttle, who said a verbal argument between her and Batista turned physical. He hit her face and destroyed their apartment, she said.

When Tuttle attempted to leave, Batista blocked the door and pushed her onto the bed. He then left in a vehicle with the couple’s 1-year-old, but returned moments later with the child.

Tuttle went to the residence of a neighbor, who called 911.

Batista then yelled outside asking where the shotgun shells were.

The front door of 10 Amity Court was ripped off its hinges and there was blood on the stairs, police said. They found broken items scattered on the floor, broken doors, emptied cabinets and a broken phone. Police did not find the shotgun Tuttle told police Batista owned.

Officers noted a bruise on Tuttle’s cheek.

Batista remains at Lackawanna County Prison in lieu of $5,000 bail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10:15 a.m. on July 9 before District Judge George Seig.
