If rain or other bad weather precludes the planned outdoor concert component of the annual Scrantastic Spectacular celebration July 3, the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic will perform its patriotic repertoire that evening in the Scranton High School auditorium.
While officials organizing the Independence Day-eve celebration in downtown Scranton hope the weather accommodates the orchestra performance and subsequent fireworks show planned for Courthouse Square, county Commissioners Bill Gaughan and Chris Chermak recently approved an agreement with the Scranton School District that makes the auditorium available as an alternative venue for the philharmonic performance.
The high school’s auditorium will serve as a rehearsal space regardless of the weather July 3, but would host the 7:30 p.m. performance should inclement conditions cancel the outdoor show otherwise planned for the North Washington Avenue side of the square.
Assuming the weather accommodates, Zambelli Fireworks, a Western Pennsylvania vendor that produces more than 1,600 fireworks and pyrotechnic displays per year, will put on the Scrantastic display beginning about 9:30 p.m., launching fireworks from the roof of the Linden Garage downtown. The fireworks show would be held July 5, also at the 9:30 p.m., if the weather prevents it July 3.
The Scrantastic Spectacular is a free event open to the public. It begins at 4 p.m. and will also feature food vendors, games, bounce houses, kids activities and live local bands performing on a side stage.
