On a day when temperatures again reached 90, Scranton celebrated an addition to its outdoor pool facilities as Mayor Paige Gebhardt Cognetti cut the ribbon at the Weston Field pool at 982 Providence Road. “The Weston Field pool offers a new swimming option for families and greater accessibility so that it can be enjoyed by more of our residents,” Cognetti said. “We’re grateful for the work with our partners and the funding that made this possible.” The project included the removal of a deteriorating structure along Providence Road and the construction of two new buildings, outdoor shower facilities, water play features and a retractable shade structure over part of the city’s first zero-entry pool — a gradual, sloping entry, similar to a natural beach, instead of steps. Just over $3.6 million of the city’s American Rescue Plan Act funds were allocated for the project. Outdoor facilities across the city opened June 14, and the new Weston Field attraction held a soft opening Sunday. Scranton’s other outdoor pools at Connell Park and Weston Park opened in mid-June, along with the splash pad at Novembrino Park. Outdoor pools, including Weston Field, are open daily from noon to 6 p.m. through Labor Day. The indoor pool at Weston Field is open year-round weekdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for adult swim and 3 to 5:30 p.m. for the general public. Development continues on a new splash pad at Capouse Avenue Park and the new pool complex at Nay Aug Park.
