A Scranton man followed another vehicle to Sheetz in Taylor and threatened a passenger with a gun after driving erratically on Main Street.
Barshawn Campbell, 29, is charged with assault and making terroristic threats.
According to the criminal complaint:
Just after 8:30 p.m. on Monday, officers responded to Sheetz at 114 S Main St. on a report of a driver who threatened another man with a gun several times, putting him in fear for his life.
Officers on scene spoke with Malik Ibn Ali and Hasanna S. Johnson, who said they had been driving down Main Street when Campbell passed them in a black Audi, driving erratically.
The couple got in front of Campbell at a red light, and he ran the light and followed them to the Sheetz parking lot, where Ali got out of the car, making sure his hands were visible.
Campbell, still in his car, then took a gun out and pointed it at Ali. Frightened, Ali tried to back down, he told police.
Campbell got out of his car and kept his hand on his gun, while it was inside his sweatpants.
Ali told him, “You’re the one with the gun.”
Johnson then took a photo of Campbell’s car, and Campbell sped away.
Johnson provided a written statement to police indicating Campbell was driving erratically as he drove past her at a traffic light near Walmart.
Officers reviewed video surveillance and were able to see Ali and Johnson pull into the Sheetz parking lot, and Campbell pulling in moments later.
“The suspect can be seen pointing his right hand at the victim and his left arm appeared to be downwards. The suspect eventually gets back into his vehicle and leaves the area,” officers wrote in the affidavit.
Officers caught up with Campbell in the 100 block of South Hyde Park Avenue in Scranton and arrested him.
During an interview, he admitted he had been at Sheetz and there was a verbal argument stemming from a road rage incident. Officers spotted a black gun on the rear passenger-side floor.
Campbell is also charged with carrying an unlicensed firearm. He remains at Lackawanna County Prison in lieu of $20,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on July 22 before District Judge Christopher Szewczyk.
