The Lackawanna County Board of Commissioners consists of three elected officials. The Board of Commissioners serves as the governing body of Lackawanna County.
The Commissioners are responsible for implementing operational policies and administering programs that deal with human services, public safety, economic development, and recreational and quality of life amenities in an efficient and cost-effective manner for the residents of Lackawanna County.
The Commissioners are also intricately involved in establishing salary and personnel policies, hiring director level positions, appointing residents to Boards and Authorities, and serving as the Board of Elections.
Commissioners must also levy taxes, when necessary, to fund vital community programs, while also monitoring the size and cost of government and making decisions for reorganizing, consolidating or eliminating various departments or services. The Commissioners must also approve all contracts and ordinances for the purchase of goods, real estate and audits.
In the community, the Commissioners are actively involved with the public and private sector officials on development projects that will enhance our operating environment, improve our business climate, and create employment opportunities. They also work closely with elected officials from the County’s municipalities on various events and activities.
