CARBONDALE — A city man is accused of pushing officers Saturday as they attempted to take him into custody.
Ryan Kundla, 29, of 26 Wyoming St., repeatedly threatened his neighbors and directed racial slurs at them, police say.
According to the criminal complaint:
At about 1 p.m., Carbondale police were called to an altercation involving a baseball bat near Lincoln Avenue and Wyoming Street.
When officers arrived, they spoke with Travis Spencer and Rabiyah Pamplin who said Kundla drove by on an e-bike calling out racial slurs and threatening to attack them.
Kundla then went back to his house and grabbed a baseball bat from his porch. He approached the two on the street, using racial slurs and threatening to hurt them and their children, the two told officers.
Officers then interviewed Kundla, who they noted was “pushing and acting erratically.” When officers asked Kundla what happened, he became belligerent and aggressive.
He told officers he got the bat to hurt Spencer and Pamplin, but then thought better of it.
Officers told Kundla he needed to calm down or he would be detained. He continued to act belligerently and when officers attempted to restrain him, he pushed them.
After officers put him in handcuffs, he attempted to reenter the house. When police repeatedly told Kundla that he needed to remain seated, he didn’t comply.
As officers were taking him to the ground, Kundla began to fight them by swinging his arms and pushing officers to free himself.
Police were able to put Kundla in a patrol car.
Officers suffered minor injuries during the scuffle, court papers say.
Neighbors told police Kundla was the aggressor in the incident and went after others with a bat, but didn’t hit anyone. They said he used racial slurs.
Police noted Kundla had a history with the family he threatened and that he had a history of mental health issues.
He is charged with felony aggravated assault, simple assault, ethnic intimidation, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and harassment. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 11:15 a.m. on April 9 before District Judge Joanne Corbett. Kundla remains in Lackawanna County Prison for lack of $10,000 bail.
